The research season at Hakai got off to a flying start with the visit by the Hakai Ancient Landscapes Archaeology Project team led by Duncan McLaren of the Hakai Institute and the University of Victoria. This A-team of BC coastal archaeologists included:

  • Consulting archaeologists Jim Stafford and John Maxwell
  • Heiltsuk archaeologist Elroy White
  • Heiltsuk field assistant Josh Vickers
  • Wuikinuxv field assistants Johnny Johnson and Andrea Walkus
  • Jenny Cohen, graduate student at the University of Victoria
  • Julia Jackley, graduate student at Simon Fraser University
  • Daryl Fedje, Parks Canada
  • Quentin Mackie, University of Victoria

Through fair weather and foul, always over rough seas, they continued their inventory of archaeological sites in nearby Kwakshua Channel and Choked Passage, and farther afield in Kildidt Narrows and on Triquet Island. The remarkable richness of the early discoveries gives us a tantalizing glimpse of what is to come as the results are consolidated in future years.
