Imagine a coastal temperate rainforest. You may think of soaring cedars and dense understory. But that is only one part of the ecosystem. Much of the outer coast from central British Columbia to southeast Alaska is covered by an otherworldly tangle of century-old stunted shore pines, spongy mosses, fragrant leaves, and sticky stems.
