The Ocean’s Hidden Food Web - Hakai Institute

The Ocean’s Hidden Food Web

In a single teaspoon of ocean water, life overflows. Millions of microscopic organisms eat, reproduce, and die in an intricate cycle—a web of connections and interactions—that ties into another, much larger one. Without these microbes, the oceans—and the world as we know it—would come to a grinding halt.

And yet, we know so very little about them or the hundreds of thousands of different viruses that infect them. Hakai Institute’s Marine Food Webs Working Group is a unique team of researchers who are working to better our understanding of this miniature marine world. Follow them out onto the water to find out what they are learning about the tiniest and most abundant forms of life here on planet Earth.
