Help Sustain the Calvert Coastal Observatory

The Calvert Coastal Observatory is a year-round hub for science and safety on British Columbia’s remote Central Coast. Its self-supporting facilities champions coastal science, improves safety and fosters dialogue across the region.

Safety & Emergency Response

  • Base for communication, coordination & support. Dock, helipad, internet, VHF radio, AIS.

  • First aid, emergency response, spill response & coordination.

  • Response within a 40 km radius, subject to conditions.

  • Work with Coast Guard, RCMP, Fisheries, Park Rangers & First Nations Guardians.

Headquarters for Nearby Conservancies

  • Registration, orientation, education & support for visitors to the Hakai Lúxbálís Conservancy.

  • Manage all visits: ecotours, sailing fleets, kayak outfitters, schools & community organizations.

  • Resource center for the other nearby conservancies: Calvert Island, Koeye & Namu.

  • Work with BC Parks Rangers & Guardians to enforce policies.

  • Work with BC Parks Rangers to maintain trails.

Coastal Science Observatory

  • Hub for observation of the coastal ocean, fjords & watersheds.

  • Combine advanced instrumentation & human resources.

  • Training center for knowledge transfer to other organizations, extending our scientific footprint.

  • Educate and inspire schools, community groups & all other visitors.

Meeting & Collaborative Center

  • Host conferences & workshops where formal science meets traditional knowledge.

  • Foster dialogue between communities & cultures.

  • Tackle topics in Indigenous governance, law, and leadership.

  • Build common interests among Central Coast communities.
